The painting is the first thing one sees on entering. The vermilion meets the jaali shadow at the same hour every afternoon.

A wall the family had been waiting to fill for nine years. The painting is the size of the wall, exactly.

The customer asked for the parikrama at first light. The painting was begun on a Tuesday, signed eight Tuesdays later.

Chapter IV

Tuesdays at the easel

Mid-stroke, the knife loaded with vermilion. Six layers; this is layer three.
