ALLEPPEY BACKWATERS AT DAWN II — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
A kettuvallam moored close in, palms leaning over green water, and the first sun coming through the canopy in patches. Sandhya Kaushik works the water in long horizontal knife strokes that hold the reflection of the palms without describing them, and lets the boat's thatched curve be the one hard-edged shape in the picture.
Green-dominant and calm — the counterweight to the warmer Kerala temple pieces. It works in a room that already has wood and plants in it. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
