On this composition

A painting, before the light.

Amber Fort outside Jaipur, spread across its tan Aravalli hillside in the late-day sun. The honey-coloured palace and its courtyards fill the centre, with watchtowers and a long defensive wall running up the ridge behind. Below, the still water of Maota Lake holds the fort's reflection, and a pair of elephants with riders moves along the causeway past coloured market umbrellas. Sandhya Kaushik builds the sandstone in warm palette-knife blocks of honey, tan and sienna, then drags the lake in horizontal scrapes of gold and teal.

The warm stone and mirrored water make it a grounded, golden piece. It reads well over a sofa, a sideboard, or a dining wall that can take a large architectural view.
