On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The bustling market lane that leads to the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan. A pink and saffron arched gateway closes the far end of the gali, and a dense crowd of pilgrims funnels toward it between two rows of shops. On the wires and parapet across the top, monkeys perch and lope, a Vrindavan constant. The foreground belongs to the flower sellers: deep baskets heaped with marigold in orange and gold on the left, and red and pink roses on the right, with garlands strung above the stalls. Sandhya Kaushik works it all in quick loaded palette-knife strokes, each figure and bloom a single confident dab, the whole lane glowing pink, saffron and rose.

The packed colour and movement make it a warm, lively piece. It holds an entryway, a kitchen wall, or a living room that welcomes some energy and bustle.
