BARSANA LATHMAR HOLI — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
Lathmar Holi at Barsana, the boisterous stick-and-shield Holi of Krishna's country. Women in red, yellow and blue saris swing long lathis at a knot of men who duck behind round painted shields; clouds of pink, gold and turquoise gulal billow up between the carved sandstone havelis, whose balconies are packed with onlookers. Sandhya Kaushik throws the powder in loose, broken brushwork and loads the saris and shields in thick palette-knife colour, so the whole street vibrates with movement and pigment.
This is the most exuberant, high-colour piece in the group. The wide format carries a living-room wall, a dining wall, or an entry that can take real energy.
