BEKAL FORT ON THE KERALA COAST — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
Bekal Fort on the north Kerala coast, jutting into the Arabian Sea at the close of day. The broad laterite ramparts sit on a rocky promontory in ochre and rust, with the round white observation tower rising at the top. Coconut palms lean in from the right over a sandy shore, and the sea below churns in slate blue and pewter, breaking white over the rocks. A bank of lavender-grey cloud takes a warm peach band of sunset along the horizon. Sandhya Kaushik works the fort and rocks in heavy palette-knife strokes and scratches the surf in with the knife's edge.
The cool sea against the warm headland gives the piece a salt-air, end-of-day calm. It suits a living room, a coastal bedroom, or a study that wants weather and water.
