On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The Vijay Stambh, the Tower of Victory, rising over Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan. The nine-storey sandstone tower fills the centre, each tier ridged with carved balconies and pierced windows in honey ochre and sienna. Around it the fort plateau spreads out in worn ruins, low domes and stepped terraces, with market umbrellas in pink, blue and yellow dotted across the far ramparts. Sandhya Kaushik builds the tower in stacked palette-knife planes that hold the relief of the carving, and washes an apricot-gold haze across the wide sky behind.

The single strong vertical against the open plateau gives the piece a quiet monumentality. It suits a living-room wall, a study, or a tall hallway that can carry the tower's height.
