First light on Dal Lake, before the water has been disturbed. A cluster of shikaras lies moored at the near bank, their carved canopies and cushions still in shadow, while the far shore dissolves into mist and the Zabarwan hills catch the earliest warmth. Sandhya Kaushik lays the sky and the still water in long horizontal knife pulls that let the paint itself carry the calm, then loads the boats in short, thick, saturated strokes so they sit forward of the haze.
