HOUSEBOAT AT DUSK, DAL LAKE III — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
A carved cedar houseboat with its lamps just lit, and the lake going navy around it. The fretwork along the verandah is picked out in warm ochre against the cooling water, and the reflection runs down the canvas in broken vertical strokes that never quite resolve. Sandhya Kaushik keeps the darks warm — plum and umber rather than black — so the lamplight has something to sit against.
A low-key, evening piece. It suits a room lit by lamps rather than daylight, and hangs well above a sideboard or a bed. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
