On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The market that meets on the water before sunrise. Shikaras come in heaped with greens, gourds and bundled herbs, and the vendors lean across the gunwales to trade while the lake is still glass. Sandhya Kaushik uses the produce as her colour engine — cadmium greens and oranges knifed on thick and unmixed — against water rendered in cooler, thinner, broken strokes so the boats read as the warm centre of the picture.

The busiest painting in the Kashmir group, and the one that carries a dining room or a kitchen wall where a scene with life in it is wanted. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
