GANGOTRI TEMPLE IN THE HIMALAYAS — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
Gangotri, the Himalayan source-shrine of the Ganga, deep in a Garhwal river gorge. A cluster of small temples in ochre, red and gold sits on the left bank; the Bhagirathi tumbles white and pewter over grey boulders through the centre, and lines of red, blue and yellow prayer flags cross the ravine. Dark pines climb the rock walls toward snow peaks and a soft, clouded sky. Sandhya Kaushik works the water and stone in cool slate and silver knife-strokes, then warms the shrines and the riverside path in ochre and rust so the eye travels to the temples.
The cool mountain palette keeps the mood fresh and meditative. The vertical view opens up a narrow wall, a stairwell, or a quiet reading corner.
