On this composition

A painting, before the light.

Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple at Amritsar, at the close of day. The gilded sanctum sits at the centre of the sacred tank, its domes and façade laid in heavy gold and amber impasto; the white marble causeway runs straight toward it, railings catching the light, with pilgrims walking the path. A warm orange and rose sky fills the top of the canvas and the gold pours down into the Amrit Sarovar as a long broken reflection. Sandhya Kaushik keeps the water in teal and ochre scrapes so the mirrored temple shimmers without losing the knife texture.

The symmetry and the golden light make this a serene, devotional piece. The upright format suits an entryway, a stairwell, or a prayer corner.
