HAMPI STONE CHARIOT AT SUNSET — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
The famous stone chariot at the Vitthala temple in Hampi, the old Vijayanagara capital in Karnataka. The carved ratha stands in the centre of a flagstone courtyard, its round stone wheels and the worn elephant carvings at its base picked out in terracotta and sandstone. Colonnaded mandapa ruins flank it left and right, and beyond them the boulder-strewn Hampi hills roll back toward the Tungabhadra river, which winds through in pale blue. Sandhya Kaushik builds the stonework in warm palette-knife ridges of gold ochre and umber and floods the sky with amber sunset light.
The single carved monument against the open ruins gives the piece a calm, archaeological stillness. It suits a living-room wall, a study, or a gallery grouping of heritage views.
