On this composition

A painting, before the light.

Kashi Vishwanath, the golden Shiva temple at the heart of Varanasi, seen from the old city lanes. Its gilded shikhara blazes amber and ochre at the top of the frame; a sunlit flagstone lane falls away below between warm sandstone and brick buildings, where small figures climb toward the shrine. The pale grey minaret of the neighbouring Gyanvapi mosque stands in the morning haze behind. Sandhya Kaushik loads the gold tower in thick knife-work, then keeps the lane and walls in honey, sienna and muted green so the spire pulls the eye upward.

The climbing perspective and the gleam of gold give the piece a pilgrim's-eye energy. It suits a hallway, a stairwell, or a narrow entry wall.
