The performer caught in the moment the lamp is the only light — chutti green across the face, the headdress rising out of the dark, crimson and gold in the costume pulled up out of near-black surroundings. Sandhya Kaushik works almost entirely in the top two-thirds of the value range being absent: it is a dark painting with three or four places where the paint is loaded and bright.

The one figure-led work in the collection and the strongest single statement in it. Best given a wall of its own. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
