On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The striped lighthouse on its headland with the cove below, catamarans drawn up on the sand and the surf coming in as thick white knife work. Palms lean in from the right. Sandhya Kaushik lets the lighthouse's red and white be the only hard colour statement and keeps everything else — sand, sea, sky — in warm greys and golds.

An easy, open coastal piece. It suits a bright room and hangs comfortably at eye level over a console or a bench. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
