On this composition

A painting, before the light.

A pastoral scene from Braj. Blue-skinned Krishna sits cross-legged in a yellow dhoti beneath a large spreading tree, lifting the flute to his lips; a white-and-rust cow with painted horns rests against him, a dark cow leans in at right, and more cattle wander the curving dirt path behind. Pink-ochre hills of Govardhan rise under a soft blue sky. Sandhya Kaushik builds the earth and path in warm palette-knife sweeps of ochre and sienna, the tree canopy in heavy green and umber dabs, and keeps Krishna's blue and the cows' coats bright against the dust.

The mood is gentle and devotional, grounded in the land rather than gilded. It suits a pooja corner, a living room, or a child's room where the story can be told.
