On this composition

A painting, before the light.

Kusum Sarovar near Govardhan, the sandstone bathing tank and its ornate cenotaphs at dusk. Domed chhatris in red and ochre stone line the far edge above broad stepped ghats, their forms mirrored in the calm green water; peacocks perch on the domes, palms break the skyline and coloured canopies open along the steps. A pink and gold sky fills the upper canvas. Sandhya Kaushik builds the pavilions in warm palette-knife stone and gilds the domes, then drags the still kund in deep green and amber reflections.

The symmetry of pavilion and reflection gives the piece a settled, golden-hour calm. The wide view suits a wall above a sideboard, a sofa, or a dining table.
