THE TORII GATES OF FUSHIMI INARI IV — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
The tunnel of gates going up the hill, vermilion posts repeating into the distance with green light coming through the gaps. Sandhya Kaushik uses the repetition as rhythm — each post a single loaded stroke, slightly different in mix from its neighbour — and puts one small figure in the passage to give the scale.
The strongest colour contrast in the collection: saturated red against deep green. It needs a plain wall and rewards one. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
