On this composition

A painting, before the light.

Red rorbuer on their stilts against black rock, and a fjord flat enough to take the whole thing back upside down. Sandhya Kaushik uses cadmium red almost neat for the cabins — the only warm colour in the picture — and everything else in slate, cold blue and white, so the buildings sit like sparks against it.

The coolest and most northern piece in the collection, and the natural partner to Pangong Tso in a two-hang. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
