MADURAI MEENAKSHI TEMPLE GOPURAM — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
A towering gopuram of the Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai. The pyramidal gate-tower is packed from base to crown with hundreds of carved and brightly painted figures of gods and guardians in emerald green, pink, cobalt, yellow and gold. It rises against a blue sky that pales to cream at the horizon, the stone base and a colonnade below dotted with small visitors. Sandhya Kaushik keeps the sculptural riot in quick, jewel-bright dabs, the whole tower shimmering with colour while the lower stone stays warm and plain.
The sheer colour and height make it the boldest piece in this set. It suits a living room, an entryway, or a pooja room that can carry a vivid, devotional subject.
