MAHESHWAR GHATS ON THE NARMADA — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
The riverfront at Maheshwar on the Narmada, crowned by the cream-sandstone palace and domed chhatris of Ahilya Fort. Wide shallow steps spread across the canvas; women in red and yellow saris move down toward the water, where lengths of cloth are left drying over the stone. The Narmada itself is an unusual turquoise-teal, calmer and clearer than the Ganga scenes, under a soft pastel sky. Sandhya Kaushik builds the palace in pale palette-knife planes of cream and stone, the saris in bright single strokes, and the water in cool blue-green sweeps that catch the light.
The pale architecture and clear water give a bright, serene mood. It suits a bedroom, a sunroom, or a calm living-room wall that wants cooler colour.
