MATHURA HOLI CELEBRATION — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
Holi at full pitch in Mathura, the most colour-saturated scene in the series. A blue tractor mounts a water cannon that throws a white jet across the frame, and the crowd below erupts in clouds of pink, violet and yellow gulal. On the left, costumed figures of Radha and Krishna stand crowned on a float with drummers beating dhols beside them; behind everything rise the red and ochre shikharas of a Mathura temple and a wall of brick-orange houses. Sandhya Kaushik works the whole canvas in loaded palette-knife dabs, every reveller a stroke of magenta, gold, cobalt or green, the powder hanging in soft smears of pure colour.
This is festival energy without restraint. It carries a large living-room wall, a stairwell, or a playroom that can take a burst of colour rather than calm.
