MEENAKSHI TEMPLE GOPURAM MADURAI — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
One of the great gopurams of the Meenakshi Temple at Madurai, filling the canvas top to bottom. The gate-tower is a dense stack of carved deities and beasts, lit gold, rust and rose by a low sun; the tiers narrow toward a crowned ridge against a soft peach sky. At the base a dark doorway and a few small figures give the scale. Sandhya Kaushik renders the carving in relentless knife-work, every figure a separate ridge of ochre, terracotta and cream, so the tower reads as encrusted with sculpture.
The sheer vertical density of the gopuram makes this a commanding piece. It suits a tall entry, a stairwell, or a study wall that can take a single bold subject.
