On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The Mughal terraces above Dal Lake in the fortnight the chinars turn. Water steps down the central channel in flat pale slabs while the trees on either side are built from dense, broken flecks of vermilion, rust and Naples yellow laid over one another. Sandhya Kaushik lets the garden's architecture stay simple and geometric so the foliage can do all the work.

The most colour-saturated piece in the group. It carries a large wall on its own and warms a room with cool north light.
