On this composition

A painting, before the light.

A Portuguese-Baroque church in Old Goa, its tall twin-towered facade weathered to cream, ochre and dusty rose. Coconut palms lean in from both sides, a paved plaza opens in front with a few small figures and a white statue, and the sky warms from cobalt at the top to amber along the horizon. Sandhya Kaushik blocks the facade in confident palette-knife planes, picking out the cornices and arched doorways in shadow, the palms in dark sweeping strokes, the plaza in pale gold.

The grand white facade against palms and warm sky gives it a colonial, coastal calm. It suits a living room, a study, or a hallway that takes a strong central subject.
