On this composition

A painting, before the light.

Panchganga Ghat, with the Alamgir Mosque and its twin minarets riding the skyline above a dense, stacked hillside of old Varanasi houses. A long flight of pale steps cuts down the centre to the riverfront, where coloured umbrellas open in pink, blue and green and a few boats sit on the water. Sandhya Kaushik works the buildings in warm palette-knife blocks of sandstone, ochre and weathered brown, the mosque domes in soft grey-gold, and a cream-peach sky pressed flat behind the minarets.

The strong vertical of the mosque against the horizontal ghat gives a balanced, architectural calm. It suits a living-room feature wall or a wide space above a sideboard.
