PANGONG TSO IV — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
The lake as a single long band of colour, which is how it actually reads at that altitude — turquoise at the shallows going to ink at depth, with bare mountains rising straight out of it and no foreground to speak of. Sandhya Kaushik paints it almost as an abstract: three horizontal registers, the water knifed in long uninterrupted pulls, the rock in dry broken ochre and violet.
The coolest piece in the collection and the most modern in feel. It sits well in a minimal interior where the other Himalayan works would be too warm. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
