On this composition

A painting, before the light.

Place du Tertre in the early evening. A painter stands at a wooden easel mid-stroke, brush to a small canvas, a loaded palette of red, ochre and white in his other hand. Behind him the pale domes of Sacre-Coeur rise cream and gold above the rooftops. A red-and-white striped cafe awning and a window box of magenta geraniums crowd the left edge, while bistro tables and bentwood chairs wait under a parasol at right. Sandhya Kaushik lays the cobblestones in a patchwork of palette-knife dabs in terracotta, slate and butter, and keeps the sky a flat wash of peach and rose.

The square format and the painter-within-the-painting give it a warm, lived-in charm. It suits a studio, a reading corner, or a hallway where a small bright scene rewards a closer look.
