On this composition

A painting, before the light.

A lane in the French Quarter of Pondicherry at the close of day. Mustard- and ochre-washed colonial houses line both sides, with wrought-iron balconies, green shutters and a red awning; bougainvillea spills over a corner wall and a bicycle leans below it. A leafy tree shades a cafe table where a few people sit under a striped umbrella, and the cobbled street runs straight to a slip of sea and a peach sunset at its end. Sandhya Kaushik builds the houses in warm palette-knife planes of ochre, sienna and cream, flecks the blossoms and umbrella in bright dabs, and drags the street in long horizontal strokes of fawn and grey.

The long view down the street gives real depth to a wall. It suits a hallway, a kitchen, or an entry where a quiet street scene opens up the space.
