RAMNAGAR FORT VARANASI AT SUNSET — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
The view across the Ganga to Ramnagar Fort, the riverside seat of the Maharaja of Banaras, at the close of day. The sandstone fort and its turrets sit low on the right bank, lit coral and gold by the setting sun. A wide, almost glassy river fills the centre, crossed by a few small rowboats of figures; birds scatter across a coral-rose and pale-blue sky. In the foreground, terracotta steps and boat hulls are built up in heavy palette-knife slabs, while Sandhya Kaushik keeps the open water in long thin scrapes of slate blue and salmon.
The breadth of sky and water makes this the calmest, most expansive view in the series. It opens up a bedroom, a living room, or a wide wall that wants air and light.
