On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The Red Fort in Delhi, the Lal Qila, seen from the plaza before its main Lahori Gate. The massive Mughal walls run in deep brick-red and oxblood sandstone, the central gateway rising to domed chhatri pavilions with the Indian tricolour flying above. Warm gold light catches the carved stone, and a crowd of small figures in white, ochre and red moves across the open forecourt. A band of reflective pavement runs along the bottom of the frame. Sandhya Kaushik loads the sandstone in thick palette-knife slabs of brick and oxblood, lifts the lit edges in gold, and warms the sky to peach-orange behind the ramparts.

The depth of red and the flag give the piece a grounded, civic presence. It suits a living-room wall, a study, or an entryway that can carry a strong, historic image.
