On this composition

A painting, before the light.

A scene from Subah-e-Banaras, the morning music and prayer ritual on the Varanasi ghats. Three musicians sit cross-legged on a platform over the water with tabla and sitar, silhouetted against a low sun whose painted rays fan out across the sky. Two temple towers in terracotta and ochre frame the composition left and right, and small groups of listeners sit on the steps below. Sandhya Kaushik renders the sunburst and its reflection in long amber and gold strokes, the temples in stacked palette-knife planes, the figures as warm dark silhouettes.

The symmetry and the music give it a serene, ceremonial mood. It suits a meditation room, a music room, or a calm living-room wall that welcomes a sunrise.
