On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The view from the garden across the river, which is where the Taj is seen without its crowds. The marble takes the first warmth of the day while the river below is still cold, and mist sits between the two. Sandhya Kaushik paints the dome and minarets thin and pearl-toned, almost dry-brushed, and saves her thickest paint for the near bank and the water.

The most recognisable subject in the collection and the natural centrepiece of a heritage grouping. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
