THIKSEY MONASTERY AT SUNRISE IV — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
The monastery stacked up its hill in white tiers, with the red and ochre temple blocks holding the summit and the Stok range still cold behind. Sandhya Kaushik builds the whitewash from warm and cool whites side by side rather than one flat tone, so the tiers separate in the light, and keeps the snow peaks thin and blue against a thickly loaded sky.
The most classically composed piece in the Ladakh group — a clear subject, a clear light. It anchors a living-room wall well. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
