On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The Varanasi waterfront at sunrise, seen from the river. A single boatman stands poling a dark wooden boat across the foreground, while the ghats rise behind him in stacked terracotta, ochre and red buildings crowned by a tall temple spire. Coloured umbrellas in green, orange and red dot the steps. Sandhya Kaushik piles the architecture in thick palette-knife slabs of warm earth tones, sets a cream-gold sky flat behind the skyline, and breaks the water into short strokes of blue, amber and white.

The warm light and lone figure give it a calm, working-river quiet. It suits a living room, a dining wall, or an entryway that takes a glow of morning colour.
