On this composition

A painting, before the light.

A tight raft of country boats drawn up against the stone steps of a Varanasi ghat as the day closes. One boatman sits in the foreground hull, knees drawn up, while the rust-red shikhara of a riverside temple and a wall of stacked city houses catch the last gold behind him. Sandhya Kaushik lays the boats in thick palette-knife slabs of honey brown, raw umber and ochre, each plank a separate ridge of paint; the water below shifts to slate blue and teal where the knife scrapes thin.

It carries a quiet, end-of-day stillness without sentiment. The horizontal weight of the boats suits a wall above a console, a bench, or a long credenza in a living room.
