On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The Varanasi waterfront in the soft half-hour after sundown. A tall terracotta-red temple tower anchors the right of the frame, pale stacked houses climb behind it, and the sky cools from amber to dusty rose. The Ganga lies almost flat, scattered with small flames where diyas have been set adrift; their reflections pull down in broken gold streaks. Sandhya Kaushik keeps the buildings in warm palette-knife planes of terracotta and sandstone, then drags the water thin so the river-grey reads as glass.

The quiet, low-contrast light makes this a restful piece. It suits a bedroom, a dining wall, or anywhere a hush is welcome at the end of the day.
