VARANASI GHATS FROM THE RIVER — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
The classic dawn approach to Banaras, viewed across the bow of a wooden boat that noses into the foreground. The ghats run in a long shallow arc: a red shikhara at left, a band of stacked buildings, temple flags and coloured umbrellas in red, blue and green, with a hazy skyline of distant spires behind. A pale yellow-peach sunrise fills the upper canvas and the Ganga lies still, holding broken reflections. Sandhya Kaushik keeps the architecture in compact palette-knife dabs and drags the water in long horizontal scrapes of gold and slate.
The wide, low composition is the most panoramic in the set. It reads well over a long sofa, a bed, or a dining table where the full sweep of the riverfront can stretch out.
