VARANASI GHATS IN MONSOON RAIN — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
A rare wet-weather view of Banaras. Rain falls in long diagonal streaks from a bruised slate-grey sky; figures cross the wet steps under red, blue and yellow umbrellas, their reflections smeared on the stone. Ochre and mustard buildings and a red temple hold the middle distance, while an empty wooden boat rides the choppy teal-grey Ganga at right. Sandhya Kaushik scratches the rain in with the knife's edge over loose, broken brushwork, and the water churns in cold green and pewter strokes.
The cool storm palette and movement make this the most atmospheric piece in the series. It brings a moody counterpoint to a living room, a library, or a study of warmer tones.
