On this composition

A painting, before the light.

A tall view straight down one of Varanasi's old-city galis. Ochre and terracotta houses lean in on both sides, carved wooden balconies and a tangle of overhead wires crossing the blue slot of sky. Two figures walk into the shade while a cow rests in the one patch of sunlight on the paving. Sandhya Kaushik builds it in hand-painted acrylic, the lit walls troweled in thick saffron and cream against cool violet-grey shadow.

The vertical format suits a tall, narrow wall, a stair landing, or an entryway, where the receding lane draws the eye upward. Warm sandstone tones with that single shaft of light keep it lively rather than busy.
