A QUIET CANAL, VENICE II — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
Not the Grand Canal — a back waterway with laundry across it and one gondola going under a low bridge. Sandhya Kaushik gets the damp into the plaster by dragging a lighter ochre over a darker one and letting it break, and paints the green water in short horizontal strokes that carry the walls' colour without copying it.
Intimate rather than grand, which is what makes it work at close quarters — a stairwell, a small study, a narrow wall. This is one of four paintings Sandhya made of this subject — the light, the weather and the arrangement of the elements differ in each, and no two are the same picture.
