On this composition

A painting, before the light.

A quiet back canal in Venice, framed tight by leaning houses on either side. Ochre and rose-plaster palazzi rise from the green water, their shutters cool blue; magenta-pink flower boxes overhang the windows. Two black gondolas lie moored to candy-striped mooring poles, and a low arched bridge crosses mid-frame where a couple pause against a pale gold sky. Sandhya Kaushik works the walls in thick palette-knife planes of ochre and terracotta, then drags the canal in emerald and teal scrapes broken by long reflections of gold and orange.

The narrow framing and the still water give it a calm, enclosed quiet. It suits a living room, a hallway, or a dining wall where the reflections can do the work.
