On this composition

A painting, before the light.

Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna at Mathura, lit gold by the late sun. A long ochre temple façade fills the left bank, arched and domed, its stone warmed to honey and amber. Broad steps drop to the water, crowded with the bright canvas umbrellas of riverside priests in red, blue, green and yellow, and small figures move along the terraces. Further down the bank a string of pavilions recedes into a hazy skyline, while a single wooden boat of pilgrims sits on the silver-grey Yamuna at right. Sandhya Kaushik builds the architecture in thick palette-knife slabs of ochre and sienna, then scrapes the water thin in cool greys and broken white so it reads as moving light.

The warm stone against the cool river gives a balanced, ceremonial calm. It suits a living-room wall, a dining wall, or a wide space above a sideboard.
