On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The two great monuments of Agra set out across one long horizon. At the left the white marble Taj Mahal rises with its four minarets and outlying mosques, cool against the warm sky; at the right the red sandstone bastions and gateway of Agra Fort climb in heavy oxide-red mass. A band of dark green trees links them in the middle distance. Along the near bank a riverside market opens its multicoloured tent roofs in red, blue and yellow, with small figures and a moored boat on the Yamuna, whose surface Sandhya Kaushik drags in long silver-blue scrapes that catch the buildings above.

The wide format lets the full span of the riverfront stretch out. It reads well over a long sofa, a console, or a wide dining wall where the panorama can run end to end.
