On this composition

A painting, before the light.

The desert city of Jaisalmer on its low rise, seen across an empty stretch of the Thar. The golden sandstone fort, the Sonar Qila, sits as a fortified silhouette on the horizon, its walls and bastions warm against the sky. A long line of a camel caravan with riders crosses the foreground from left to right, the animals and their loads built up in palette-knife strokes of warm brown, their shadows raked across the rippled sand in cool blue-grey. Sandhya Kaushik keeps almost everything in one family of sand-gold and ochre, sky and ground nearly meeting, so the caravan reads as the one dark thread of movement through the heat.

The vast, near-empty space gives it a calm, cinematic stillness. The wide format suits a long living-room wall, a study, or a corridor where the caravan can travel across the room.
