YAMUNA BOATS AT DAWN, MATHURA — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
The Yamuna at first light below the Mathura ghats. Two or three wooden country boats lie moored in the foreground, their hulls reflected in teal-green water, while a few fishermen wade and cast in the shallows. The left bank carries a cluster of orange and ochre temple domes and a small shikhara, fronted by coloured umbrellas in pink, green and magenta; a hazy line of buildings fades into the warm distance. A single rower crosses mid-river, and at lower right two white egrets stand in the still water. Sandhya Kaushik paints the domes in warm palette-knife dabs of orange and gold, the water in cool teal and peach scrapes, all under a soft apricot dawn sky.
The low light and standing birds give it a gentle, waking-hour stillness. It keeps a bedroom restful and reads well above a headboard or a long sideboard.
