YAMUNOTRI TEMPLE IN THE HIMALAYAS — ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONIST CANVAS PAINTING
On this composition
A painting, before the light.
Yamunotri, the source-shrine of the Yamuna high in the Garhwal Himalayas. A small ochre-and-red temple stands on a rocky ledge beside a white waterfall that drops through a misty gorge; green pine slopes and snow rock rise steeply behind. A stony trail leads up from the foreground where pilgrims climb in twos and threes, and steam from the hot springs drifts across the rocks. Sandhya Kaushik keeps the cliffs and falls in cool slate, green and silver knife-work, then warms the shrine and the path in ochre and rust.
The fresh mountain colour and falling water give the piece a cool, restorative calm. The upright view opens a narrow wall, a stairwell, or a reading corner.
